The Time is Now! - from the Parent Council Chairman
-Marc Johnson
The beginning of a new school year is an exciting time. For new students it is a time of big change, new friends and a chance to be "out on their own." Parents who are sending their first child to college are experiencing a new stage of life (new expenses and beginnings of empty nest). For returning students and staff it is a time for renewing friendships and facing new challenges. Life is busy for all of us. There are so many things and people grabbing for our attention. The opportunities for investing our time and attention are unlimited. Unfortunately our time isn't!! How can busy parents stay involved with their busy students?
As the parent of one current Fox student and one recently graduated, I am acutely aware of how fast the college years are going by. These years can be a rich experience for both you and your children or they can be over in the blink of an eye. What is a parent to do?? GET INVOLVED!!
It doesn't take much commitment, but getting involved will make the college years at George Fox a richer and sweeter experience for both you and your student. It also is a way to connect with the University community without getting in the way of your student's new freedom.
Here are a few ways George Fox parents can get involved:
1) Check the George Fox Web Site for current info and upcoming events (the drama & music productions are awesome, not to mention championship sports teams!!).
2) Pray for your children, staff, roommates & other parents. (You can find a list of prayer concerns on the George Fox website.)
3) Make sure you register for the Family Weekend coming up November 5-7.
4) Put the Parent Day of Prayer on your calendar March 12th (If you are not able to be on campus you could volunteer to be a host for a regional site for the Day of Prayer).
I look forward to meeting you during Family Weekend and will be praying that your experience at GFU this year will be both memorable & powerful.
The Time is…NOW!! Get involved & get connected!!
See you around campus,
Marc Johnson
