Recreation at George Fox

Whether you're an outdoors person who feels most at home hiking a mountain trail or kayaking a river, or more of the “indoors type” who prefers shooting hoops or lifting weights, we've got you covered!

Oregon: An Outdoor Lover’s Paradise

Let’s start with our state. Oregon stretches from the Pacific Coast, over the Coast Range, through the fertile Willamette Valley, past the snow-capped Cascades, and into the high-desert country of central and eastern Oregon.

The beauty of it is, nothing is too far away! We’re just a two-hour drive from the slopes of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge (one of the best windsurfing spots in the country!), about an hour from beach walks on the Oregon Coast, and three hours from a rock-climbing mecca: Smith Rock in Central Oregon.

Closer to home, the city of Newberg boasts 11 parks, including a state park and disc golf courses, and is a prime spot for outdoor adventures like kayaking, paddleboarding and hiking on any number of nature trails.

Love to go biking? Among the area’s many bike routes is the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, a 130-mile trek that showcases the region’s agricultural landscape and the sites where Oregon history was made.

Beyond Campus: Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor Recreation (OREC) gives you the opportunity to explore your environment, learn new skills, try new things, and meet other students! OREC offers a variety of trips and activities, from on-campus introductory courses to week-long adventures (and everything in between).

Off-campus trips are planned and facilitated by a highly trained and certified group of student instructors. They are open to any and all George Fox students. You don't need to be a member of any club or organization to join, nor do you have to have any prior outdoor recreation experience.

Typical trips will take you snowshoeing and sledding on Mt. Hood, biking around Newberg, whitewater rafting on the Clackamas River, or learning to surf or bodyboard on the Oregon Coast. To register for OREC trips and activities and to access more information about trips, use the button below.

Upcoming OREC Activities

Unless otherwise specified, all OREC trips and activities include transportation, food, equipment and instruction. You simply need to show up in proper attire and have a great attitude!

Students who are experiencing financial difficulties can now apply for financial assistance for outdoor trips and activities through a new scholarship fund.

Rental Center

The rental center in the Hadlock Student Center is the hub for all things outdoors. Students and employees have access to a large inventory of equipment at affordable prices, including yard games, tents, snowshoes, pickleball equipment, stand-up paddleboards and more!

On Campus: University Recreation

University Recreation offers every George Fox student the chance to “find their fit” through exercise, play, exploration and competition. Serving as the hub for much of this activity is the Hadlock Student Center, a 50,000-square-foot building that features a fitness center, three full courts, a rock-climbing wall, an elevated track, and two private fitness studios. As a bonus, the views outside the building are spectacular!
