How to Become an Occupational Therapist (OT) in Oregon
by Trevor St. Clair, OTD, MS, OTR/L
Occupational therapists (OTs) evaluate and treat people who have injuries, illnesses or disabilities to help them develop or regain skills needed for the activities of daily living, such as bathing and showering, grooming, dressing, getting out of bed and feeding themselves.
Despite being rated as the #4 healthcare job in 2024 by U.S. News & World Report, there’s a shortage of OTs, especially in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, there are only about 1,600 practicing occupational therapists in Oregon – a low number in light of the state’s population of 4.2 million. According to Oregon Health Authority data from 2016-17, five counties in Oregon had zero practicing occupational therapists. The situation hasn’t improved much since then.
In Oregon, the process to become an occupational therapist is set by the Occupational Therapy Licensing Board (OTLB), which regulates the field and licenses OTs. If you want to practice in Oregon, here’s a step-by-step overview of the process.
Earn an Undergraduate Degree in a Related Field
To become an OT, you’ll need a master’s (MOT) or doctoral degree in occupational therapy (OTD) from an accredited program, so first you’ll need to earn a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field.
Undergraduate degrees that prepare students well for a graduate degree in occupational therapy include kinesiology, biology, psychology, sociology and education.

- Social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, abnormal psychology, etc.)
- Statistics
- Medical terminology
Shadow a Practicing OT
As you earn your undergraduate degree, look for opportunities to shadow practicing occupational therapists. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a variety of clinics by calling or emailing them, or even visiting them in person.
While you’re gaining knowledge and experience about the profession, research the OT programs available at different institutions and find the right fit. The best source of information is the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), which features an online school directory and other helpful resources.
Apply to an OT Program
Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential schools and confirmed that they’re recognized by ACOTE, create an account through the Occupational Therapist Centralized Application Service (OTCAS).
Keep in mind that each program has slightly different criteria for admission. Be sure to review all OTCAS and program-specific instructions so you can properly complete the application process, including the submission of transcripts, references, test scores, OT observation hours, essay, supplemental materials and other important items.
Earn a Graduate Degree in OT
Once you’ve applied and been accepted into a program, you’re well on your way. The number of years you’ll be in OT school will depend on your program of choice and whether or not you choose to pursue a master’s-level degree or a doctorate.
Master’s-level OT programs generally take two years to complete, while most OTD programs take three years to finish. The OTD program at George Fox University can be completed in less than three years, allowing you to sit for the certification exam and enter the workforce sooner than OTD students at other schools.
Although a master’s-level education is sufficient to become an OT clinician, an entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) will allow you to gain in-depth experience in areas such as program development, administration and research – in addition to preparing you for clinical work.
Take the Certification Test
Once you’ve earned your degree, you’ll take a certification test. The National Board Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) provides initial and renewal board certification for occupational therapy in the U.S.
The certification exam can be challenging and requires studying to prepare. But according to NBCOT, 96% of new graduates passed their exam in 2022, and 98% passed in 2021.
NBCOT offers resources to get ready for the exam, including a study pack and tools such as practice tests and self-assessments.
Apply for an OT License
After you pass the NBCOT exam, you can apply for and obtain an Oregon Occupational Therapy license in as little as one week. For more details, visit the Oregon Occupational Therapy Licensing Board’s website.
