Postbaccalaureate Degrees
A postbaccalaureate degree (often known as a “postbacc”) is a type of bachelor’s degree earned by someone who has previously earned a bachelor’s degree. Postbaccalaureate degree programs are generally shorter because coursework completed during the first bachelor’s degree counts toward the postbacc’s requirements.
At George Fox University, students can earn a postbaccalaureate degree through either the accelerated online degree program or the traditional undergraduate degree program.
How It Works at George Fox
Students who have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited or Association for Biblical Higher Education-accredited college or university may pursue a second bachelor’s degree at George Fox University, known as a postbaccalaureate degree. The second degree must be in a different major from any previously earned degrees.
Postbaccalaureate students are required to complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework at George Fox University, in addition to the previously earned bachelor’s degree. A previous bachelor’s degree fulfills all general education requirements at George Fox University, unless special general education requirements exist for the chosen major. All major requirements must be met before a second degree is awarded.
Credit will only be transferred for coursework that fulfills a major requirement. Courses taken as part of the student's first bachelor's degree can count toward major requirements, but postbaccalaureate students are still required to complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework at George Fox University. For some majors, such as nursing, these courses may be required to have been completed within a certain number of years prior.
Financial Aid
Financial aid for postbaccalaureate students is generally similar to that available for undergraduate students, with a few key differences.
Postbaccalaureate students are not eligible for federal grants such as the Pell Grant or the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). However, they can still qualify for federal student loans if they have not reached their aggregate loan limits. This can sometimes be a challenge for students who have already borrowed extensively during their first degree.
There are no differences in federal aid eligibility between students in George Fox’s accelerated online degree programs and those in traditional undergraduate degree programs.
